Hugh O’Brien is reelected mayor of Boston.

December 15, 1885

O’Brien (D), with 26,690 votes, defeats Clark, with 17,992, to be reelected to a second consecutive term as mayor. O’Brien wins with the largest majority in any city-wide election in Boston history up to that time. In hailing his reelection, The Pilot declares “he has broken the ice of ancient custom and hard prejudice with a discreet and sound judgment.”
